An Evening with Garrett Brown

The Garden Theatre's inaugural Princeton Cinematic Arts Award recipient, Garrett Brown, will be joining us in person for a very special evening discussing his legendary Hollywood career as the inventor of the cinema-changing Steadicam.

Garrett Brown’s Oscar-winning Steadicam revolutionized movie-making. He’s worked for Kubrick, Coppola, Scorsese, Spielberg, Lucas, George Miller and many more, and his stories and video clips have enchanted film buffs on six continents. A legend in Hollywood for forty years, Garrett still lives and works in Philadelphia and engages audiences everywhere on his passion for The Moving Camera.

Guest Speaker

Garrett Brown invented the Oscar-winning Steadicam camera stabilizer and used it on nearly 100 movies, including Rocky and The Shining.

The Steadicam liberated cinematography in 1975 by combining the smoothness of dollies and cranes with the remarkable agility of human ambulation.

And Garrett’s Skycam, and his other sporting ’cams,’ still pursue athletes worldwide and have chased their inventor into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame!

Brown’s inventions revolutionized the way we experience the world through the camera’s eye, and, not incidentally, the artful, athletic and lucrative profession of Steadicam Operator is known by whimsical acclaim as ‘The Last Great Job in the Business!’

Garrett’s original prototypes are now in the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures and a recent Steadicam improvement just earned a fourth Oscar and fifth Emmy!

Surprisingly, he is neither a scientist nor an engineer—just an extraordinarily motivated, at-times comically challenged, incredibly persistent human being. Even more surprising (to Brown at least) was his 2013 induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame!
